PROYECTO FINANCIADO POR ACCIÓ – GENERALITAT DE CATALUNYA
“SEASLAG: Development of new materials for marine regeneration structures from byproducts of the steel and agri-food industry”
Duration: July 2022- July 2025.
Team Involved: SA, PR
For decades, the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia has been promoting policies to support industry and business, the central core of the economy and an element that generates wealth and employment.
Technological advancement is key to offering solutions that have a positive impact on companies and society as a whole. From this, technology and innovation are an engine of economic recovery and a vector of competitiveness, together with internationalization, which can be promoted by donating responses to the reptes of the productive sector of Catalonia.
In this context, this line of aid is promoted through ACCIÓ (agency for business competitiveness of the Generalitat of Catalonia, attached to the Department of Business and Labor), which aims to subsidize industrial research and development projects. experimental led by a Catalan company, whose objective is the progress of the technology currently available.
THE PROJECT
“Development of new materials for marine regeneration structures from byproducts of the steel and agri-food industry”
Duration: July 2022- July 2025.
Team Involved: SA, PR
The decrease in biodiversity worldwide in the sea and oceans is mainly due to the conversion of marine habitats into hostile environments for marine flora and fauna, due to the increase in coastal activity and maritime traffic, as well as the acute contamination at the mouth of waste to the waters. The loss of marine biodiversity has a significant impact on the environment and society, with consequences for oxygen generation, decarbonization, the balance of trophic and food sources, as well as the resilience of marine organisms in the future against climatic change.
This project presents a solution focused on a sustainable and circular economy that promotes social and economic development regarding the environment and promotes the conservation of natural resources. Specifically, the SEASLAG project proposes the research and development of a new sustainable material for the creation of marine regeneration structures that allow the growth of marine biodiversity. To conclude, the revalorization of byproducts obtained from the industry will be studied with the objective of maximizing the capacity for bioregeneration and promoting the circular economy.
Currently, the solutions developed for marine regeneration are based on the construction of artificial sculptures using primary materials such as formigó, acer or derivatives of polypropylene, providing some resistant structures suitable for the growth of marine life. To provide highly efficient solutions, the construction of these structures involves the depletion of natural resources. For this reason, the main differential innovation presented by the SEASLAG project consists of the incorporation and valorization of byproducts from the steel and agri-food industry for the construction of these types of marine structures using 3D printing techniques. In this way, it will not only reduce the number of first materials of natural origin used for its manufacture, but it will also have low value in materials that currently do not have a second life and that are intended for contractors with the corresponding impact on the environment.

The project offers a comprehensive multi-technology solution combining biodiversity regenerative technology (BioBoosting System – BBS) and data collection technology through sensorized USVs as an IoT platform, cloud computing system and artificial intelligence for the generation of virtual and modeled sensors. 3D that behave like Digital Twins.
The objective of the project is to transform gray marine infrastructures into areas rich in biodiversity (marine oases) and at the same time allow their monitoring, visualization and inspection remotely and in real time to be able to assess their impact in terms of biodiversity generation, CO2 capture, identification of invasive species and improvement of water quality.
The BBS system for creating microreefs is formed by a 3-layer structure of natural materials mimicking nature: one for the attraction of microfauna (larvae, spores, gametes and microscopic life), another layer designed for macroorganisms (juvenile fish and crustaceans ) and a third layer of life fixation constructed of calcium carbonate or mineral substrate seeking to imitate nature. For this, natural materials are used, using the electrolytic reaction between an deployed metal structure and seawater and 3D printing with mineral materials and terracotta to generate calcium carbonate. The system is complemented by a fixing mechanism to the infrastructures of the main structure in three layers.
The data collection technology through sensorized USVs and its analysis is necessary within the framework of this project both for the estimation of biodiversity through the use of the Margalef and Shannon Wiener indices and for the determination of biomass and the quantity of sequestered carbon using the generalized volumetric method (GVM) or water quality improvement assessment.
The core of the project can be considered to be the micro-reef generation system, being the monitoring, visualization and inspection technology through sensorized USVs complementary for the purpose of assessing the improvements produced in biodiversity and in water quality.
Desarrollo de prototipos en el Port de Barcelona y en el Port de Palma de Mallorca.

NEXTFLOAT aims to reduce the LCOE (cost of solar energy production) and increase the competitiveness of floating offshore wind (FOW) to accelerate its large-scale deployment. The project will demonstrate an integrated compost system for the floating platform The connection and installation, including a wind turbine and an advanced rotor, requires fewer materials, fewer components, lower capital and lower operating costs and lower environmental benefits. The project also proposes innovations to bring improvements in cost-efficiency to the dynamic cable using aluminum with a conductive material.
This innovative concept will be developed in a pilot at the MISTRAl location in the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lion)

The main objective of the EFFECTIVE project is to develop a comprehensive scientific knowledge base and a practical orientation, combining science, technological solution based on nature, digitization and social involvement for the application of Ecosystrem Based Management System : EBMS) to the management of the protection and restoration of the blue natural capital of the Mediterranean.
To ensure the success of this main objective, the project has partners with extensive experience in relevant areas covering the three pillars of EBMS: management, information and participation; and also a pillar of nature-based solutions.
In addition, this project envisages the implementation of the EBMS in four pilot areas (Empordà Sea, Ebro Delta, Northern Sardinia, Cavo Greco) towards protection and restoration solutions, in addition to taking into account the connectivity between three of them through the existing Cetacean Migration Corridor.
OE It intervenes directly in the Empordà Sea (Port Estartit) and the Ebro Delta.
